Scintillating bolometers

Scintillating bolometers are particle detectors able to detect, at the same time, the scintillation light and the heat produced by a nuclear event. This double approach allows to reject interaction due to alpha particle with an efficiency close to 100%. The light yield produced by alpha particles is quite different from beta particles. If scintillating bolometers detect an event coming from double beta decay process having a transition energy greater than the last gamma line from natural radioactivity (2.5 MeV), the rejection of the alpha particles allow an experiment with a background close to zero for the time exposure necessary to cover the inverted mass hierarchy.
